The Development History of Fluorinated Plastic Bottles

2024-8-21

Fluorinated plastic bottles are a new type of plastic bottle in China, made using advanced production technology, with advanced production performance and uses, demonstrating good value in use. The barrier plastic bottles introduced into China and produced in bulk are called "fluorinated plastic bottles in molds". The "Fluorination Bottle" technology was invented by Air Products in the United States and developed by Boxmore in the United Kingdom. In the mid-1980s, this "in mold" or "online" fluorination technology won the Queen's Prize for Technological Innovation. The initial fluorination technology is called "post line fluorination" technology, which refers to first blow molding polyethylene (PE) plastic bottles, then storing the plastic bottles in a closed container, filling the container with a certain proportion of "fluorine nitrogen mixed gas" for a period of time, so as to form a fluorinated layer mainly composed of polytetrafluoroethylene on the inner wall of the plastic bottle, thereby achieving the effect of blocking organic solvents. Fluorinated plastic bottles have good performance in production, can demonstrate good value in use, and form good performance effects.

Fluorinated plastic bottles require special raw materials for production, and production is carried out according to the process to ensure the specific performance of the produced plastic bottles during use. Fluorinated plastic bottles can reduce costs, lower work costs, and improve work efficiency during production.

However, the economic viability of fluorinated plastic bottles is a prerequisite. At the initial stage of production, there must be a considerable amount of investment to form a matching production scale. If the fluorination system is fully automated computer-controlled, it must be matched with a considerable number and production capacity of blow molding equipment to form economies of scale. Secondly, the fluorination process requires a high-purity and stable mixture of fluorine and nitrogen gases, combined with specific performance (grade) polyethylene raw materials. Under normal circumstances, the cost and selling price of fluorinated barrier bottles in the international market are several tens of percentage points lower than the other two types of barrier bottles, which is why fluorinated bottles were introduced first.
